윌슨 응은 28세의 나이에 서울시립교향악단 역사상 최연소 수석 부지휘자(Associate Conductor)에 임명되어 2019년부터 2022년까지 활동했다. 밤베르크에서 열린 구스타프 말러 지휘 콩쿠르, 프랑크푸르트 게오르그 솔티 국제 지휘 콩쿠르, 파리 스베틀라노프 국제 콩쿠르, 그리고 아스펜 음악제 제임스 콜론 지휘자 상 등을 수상한 경력이 있다.

2020년 서울시향과 함께 쇼스타코비치의 교향곡 1번을 선보이며 정기공연 데뷔 무대를 마쳤으며 연합뉴스는 “쇼스타코비치 자신이 된 듯 자신감 넘치고 열정적인 태도로 이 교향곡이 담고 있는 메시지를 강하게 드러냈다”며 호평했다. 더불어 2019, 2020년 예술의전당 교향악축제에 참여했고, 2022년 롯데 클래식 레볼루션에 참여하여 코른골트의 교향곡 F#장조를 국내 초연하였다. 또한, 국내 주요 오케스트라에 초청받은 윌슨 응은 KBS교향악단, 국립심포니(구 코리안심포니), 부천필하모닉, 경기필하모닉, 한경arte필하모닉 등 유수의 오케스트라를 지휘했다.

코로나19 팬데믹 상황 속에서, 윌슨 응은 서울시립교향악단 음악감독 오스모 벤스케 대신 3번의 베토벤 9번 교향곡 ‘합창’을 지휘했다. 서울시립교향악단의 첫 번째 온라인 콘서트 지휘 및 ‘VR 오케스트라’ 녹화 등 다양한 프로젝트에도 활발하게 활동하였다.

윌슨 응은 2018년부터 홍콩 필하모닉과 긴밀한 관계를 이어오고 있다. 제 50회 홍콩 아트 페스티벌에 초청받아 홍콩 필하모닉과 함께 개막 연주회를 포함, 3번의 연주에 참여하였다. 2023년 부천아트센터 공개 공연에 초청받아 연주하였고, 통영 페스티벌 오케스트라, 툴루즈 국립 오케스트라 등을 연주했다. 만돌리니스트 줄리앙 마티뉴와 함께 음반을 녹음하여 2023년 9월 발매되었다.

윌슨 응은 취리히 톤할레 오케스트라, 프랑크푸르트 라디오 심포니, 베를린 도이체 심포니 오케스트라, 쾰른 서부독일방송교향악단, 라디오 프랑스 필하모닉, 쾰른 귀르체니 오케스트라, 덴마크 국립 교향악단, BBC 스코티시 오케스트라, 독일 청소년 오케스트라, 홍콩 필하모닉 오케스트라, 루체른 페스티벌 현악앙상블 등 세계 유수 오케스트라를 지휘해왔다.

1989년 홍콩에서 태어난 윌슨 응은 11살 때 첫 플루트 레슨을 받았고, 파리와 로잔에서 수학했다. 리옹 국립 오페라에서 플루트 수석으로 활동했으며, 이후 베를린 예술대학교와 스코틀랜드 왕립 음악원에서 지휘를 공부했다. 퍼시픽 음악제와 아스펜 음악제에서 펠로우로 선정되어 로버트 스파노, 마이클 스턴, 마르쿠스 슈텐츠, 윤 메르클에게 배웠다. 또한 베르나르트 하이팅크, 데이비드 진먼, 로저 노링턴, 존 넬슨의 마스터클래스에도 선정되어 참가했다. 현재 홍콩 구스타프 말러 오케스트라 예술감독을 맡고 있으며, 2023년 11월 한경arte필하모닉의 수석객원지휘자로 선임되어 다양한 공연을 함께 할 예정이다.

 

 

Wilson Ng just concluded his tenure as Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra - appointed at the age of 28 as the youngest conductor in the orchestra’s history - and laureate of coveted prizes at prestigious competitions around the world, such as the Mahler Competition in Bamberg, the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Frankfurt and the Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris.

Following his début with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO), Wilson Ng’s performance of Shostakovich’s symphony was praised by Yonhap News “as if he had become Shostakovich himself”. He has led the orchestra at subsequent high-profile events, including the Seoul Arts Center Orchestra Festival in 2019 and 2020, and Lotte Classic Revolution Festival 2022, where he conducted the Korean première of Korngold’s Symphony in F#. His widespread success has led him to conduct other major Korean orchestras, such as the KBS Symphony, Korean National Symphony, Bucheon, Gyeonggi, Daejeon, and Hankyung arte Philharmonic.

During the pandemic, Wilson Ng has taken the baton as substitute for SPO’s Music Director Osmo Vänskä to conduct three performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Went through multiple quartines, he also stood in for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPhil)'s Music Director Jaap van Zweden to lead the city’s largest outdoor musical event ‘Symphony Under the Stars’ and to conduct Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony subscription concert (“Ng’s performance was infectious and full of surprises… under his baton, the HKPhil displayed a sinewy refinement” acclaimed Radio Television Hong Kong).

Wilson Ng has had an ongoing relationship with the HKPhil since 2018. He was invited to conduct the HKPhil at the Hong Kong Arts Festival’s 50th anniversary opening performance, and led the orchestra again this year for 2 performances at the festival. Other highlights of his 2023 season include leading the first public performance at the newly built Bucheon Arts Center in Korea, debut performances with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, and revisiting the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, with which he made a recording with Mandolinist Julien Martineau, and it will be released under the French label Naïve in September.

Wilson Ng has worked with many leading European orchestras, including the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. His début with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie at the Alte Oper Frankfurt New Year’s concert, with Scriabin’s Poem of Ecstasy on the program, was critically acclaimed by the Frankfurter Rundschau, which headlined his concert as “The Pinnacle of Ecstasy”.

Born in Hong Kong, Wilson Ng began his musical journey at the age of 11 learning the flute, which first led him to Paris and Lausanne. He performed as a guest solo flutist with the Lyon National Opera Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was handpicked for the conducting academies at the Pacific Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival, where he was awarded the James Colon Conductor Prize. His mentors have included Osmo Vänskä, Markus Stenz and John Nelson, with other important influences including Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Robert Spano and Roger Norrington. He founded the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in Hong Kong in 2015, and serves as its Artistic Director.
